New South American Cargo Carrier Announces Its Arrival at DFW Airport
For the first time in nearly a decade, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is welcoming new cargo service from South America. Avianca has announced it will begin twice a week service from Bogota Colombia to DFW in early October. Avianca is the national airline of Colombia and is the second largest airline in South America. It is expected to fly an Airbus 330 freighter with the capacity to carry up to 68-tons of cargo. Inbound flights to DFW Airport are likely to bring flowers and other perishable goods from across the continent. These temperature and time sensitive products will be handled and stored at DFW Airport’s cold chain facility before being delivered to points around North Texas or exported to Asia. Outbound cargo from DFW to Bogota is likely to include aircraft parts, high-tech goods, pharmaceuticals, and energy sector equipment along with transit freight from Asia.
“Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is excited to announce this new cargo service as it represents new economic benefits for Dallas, Fort Worth, and the North Texas region. Avianca’s twice-weekly service will meet the growing demand from key markets in South America to the Dallas Fort Worth area, capitalizing on DFW’s central U.S. location. This new service represents a milestone for DFW as the first scheduled South American freighter from Latin America and will further the Airport’s strategy for developing trade lanes between South America and Asia,” said John Ackerman, Executive Vice President Global Strategy and Development at DFW Airport.
Key strategic logistics service providers within the community at Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport have been awarded the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) certification from the International Airport Transport Association (IATA), the trade association for the world’s airlines. The distinction recognizes companies that successfully complete a rigorous process and meet global standards set by IATA for handing pharmaceuticals at airports. DFW is one of only two airports in North America with a CEIV Pharma Community covering all links in the airport supply chain.
The following partners are founding members of DFW’s CEIV community:
dnata cargo USA (ground handling and cold chain solutions)
When it comes to shipping temperature-sensitive products, DFW Airport is committed to maintaining the integrity of the cold chain. As part of our strategy for temperature-sensitive verticals, DFW partnered with dnata Cargo USA to open a state-of-the-art cold chain facility in 2017, bringing dnata’s reputation for quality handling and expertise to pharma and perishables to the Airport.
DFW Airport has the capabilities to handle large, unconventional cargo. The size and shape of oil and gas drilling equipment presents a set of freight shipping challenges. DFW has the capability of loading these shipments from truck to plane, and our location near oil and gas drilling equipment manufacturers creates a time advantage for our unconventional cargo customers.
